Respiration mask waveguide optimisation for maximised speech intelligibility

چکیده
Both the scarcity and environmental impact of disposable face masks, as in COVID-19 pandemic, have instigated recent development reusable masks. Such masks reduce transmission infectious agents particulates, but often a user's ability to be understood when materials, such silicone or hard polymers, are used. In this work, we present numerical optimisation approach optimise waveguide topology, where is used transmit direct sound from interior mask volume outside air. This allows acoustic energy maximised according specific frequency bands, including those most relevant human speech. We employ method convert resuscitator mask, made silicone, into respiration personal protective equipment (PPE) that maximises speech intelligibility index (SII). validate experimentally well, showing improved SII using fabricated device. Together, design represents unique effective utilize adapt available apparatus filter air while improving communicate effectively, healthcare settings.

Binary Mask Estimation for Improved Speech Intelligibility in Reverberant Environments
A blind (non-ideal) time-frequency (T-F) masking technique is proposed for suppressing reverberation. A binary mask is estimated at each T-F unit by extracting a single variance-based feature from the reverberant signal and comparing its value against an adaptive threshold. The performance of the estimated binary mask is evaluated using intelligibility listening tests with hearing impaired list...
متن کاملA new binary mask based on noise constraints for improved speech intelligibility
It has been shown that large gains in speech intelligibility can be obtained by using the binary mask approach which retains the time-frequency (T-F) units of the mixture signal that are stronger than the interfering noise (masker) (i.e., SNR>0 dB), and removes the T-F units where the interfering noise dominates. In this paper, we introduce a new binary mask for improving speech intelligibility...
متن کاملSpeech Intelligibility of Cochlear-Implanted and Normal-Hearing Children
Introduction: Speech intelligibility, the ability to be understood verbally by listeners, is the gold standard for assessing the effectiveness of cochlear implantation. Thus, the goal of this study was to compare the speech intelligibility between normal-hearing and cochlear-implanted children using the Persian intelligibility test. Materials and Methods: Twenty-six cochlear-implanted childre...
متن کاملSpeech Intelligibility in Persian Children with Down Syndrome
Objectives: One of the most effective methods to describe speech disorders is the measurement of speech intelligibility. The speech intelligibility indicates the extent of acoustic signals that correctly speaker produces and hearer receives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the speech intelligibility in the Persian children with Down syndrome, age range was 3 to 5 years, who had spo...
متن کاملSpeech intelligibility after repair of cleft lip and palate
Background: Intelligibility refers to understandability of speech; and lack of it can negatively affect children’s overall communication effectiveness. Children with repaired cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL/P) may experience poor speech intelligibility. This study aimed at evaluating speech intelligibility in children with repaired CL/P who had not been referred to sp...
